Rabies antibody titer test (RNATT)

In short

A rabies antibody titer test is a blood test showing a pet's response to rabies vaccination. Some destinations require one, and each sets its own timing and pass level.

Key points

  • The timing and the acceptable result differ between authorities. One authority's rule never applies to another.
  • Where a destination sets a result level, it is quoted below exactly as published.

Great Britain

United Kingdom (Great Britain): Blood test if coming from an unlisted non-EU country

From a country that is neither in the EU nor "listed", a blood sample taken at least 30 days after vaccination must show at least 0.5 IU/ml of rabies antibodies, and you then wait 3 months from the sample date before travelling. [GOV.UK: Bring your pet dog, cat or ferret to Great Britain]

United States (CDC, dogs vaccinated outside the U.S. from high-risk countries)

United States: Dogs vaccinated outside the U.S. that were in a high-risk country in the past 6 months

Titer blood sample timing

A veterinarian must draw the blood sample at least 30 days after the dog's first valid rabies vaccination and at least 28 days before entry to the United States.

Australia (DAFF)

Australia: Dogs from the United States, United Kingdom or Canada

Covers only cats and dogs coming from the United States (excluding Guam and Hawaii), the United Kingdom or Canada, which DAFF places in Group 3.
